About the register

How this register is put together

This is a register rather than a review column. Each entry is set out the same way — the address and how you arrive, the games the operator publishes, the food and drink it names, and the character of the room — so two venues can be compared line by line. The four recorded here run from a resort complex beside the NEC to an independent casino and restaurant in a Sheffield suburb, and they suit very different trips.

Nothing here is estimated. Where an operator states what it deals or serves, that statement is recorded; where it states nothing, the entry says so instead of filling the gap. Accommodation is treated the same way — an entry either has rooms attached to the building or it does not, and the nearest practical alternatives are named. Two of the four sit inside larger complexes with a hotel on the same site, which changes what a weekend trip looks like.

Gaming Tables cover baccarat, blackjack, roulette, three card poker, cash poker, Ultimate Texas Hold’em and TCP Stud. Electronic gaming runs alongside as slots, LIVE e-tables, BOOM Slots, Blazing 7s and Dragonfire Roulette. Doors open at eleven, live gaming from one in the afternoon.

Getting In Pendigo Way, on the Resorts World site beside the NEC, with free parking and Birmingham International station a walk away. Photo ID is checked and smart-casual dress applies. Rooms are on site: The Genting Hotel stands in the same complex, alongside Santai Spa, so the floor is reachable without going outdoors.

Dining High Line Bar & Lounge carries live music and entertainment. A sports bar is advertised with eighteen large screens and private booths, and the bar and grill offer runs to tacos, bao buns, sliders, pizzas, burgers and steaks.

Atmosphere Bright, purpose-built and geared to the exhibition and concert traffic next door, so the room fills and empties with whatever is on at the NEC. It reads as part of a resort rather than a night out on its own.

Gaming The floor carries numerous roulette, blackjack and poker tables with slot games alongside, and the venue is home to the Goliath tournament, described as the largest poker event outside Las Vegas. It trades around the clock other than Christmas Day.

Getting In Judds Lane in Longford, inside the Coventry Building Society Arena, with arena parking on site and no realistic walk from the city centre. Identification is checked at reception. The DoubleTree by Hilton is built into the same complex next to the casino and shares the address, so an overnight stay needs no transport.

Dining The published descriptions record a restaurant and a bar inside the casino, but neither the operator nor the arena names them, so no outlet names are entered here. Expect service built around the gaming floor rather than a destination kitchen.

Atmosphere Function-led and closely tied to whatever the arena is staging; a fixture or a concert changes the crowd entirely. Quieter on a blank night, which is exactly when the tables are easiest to get on.

Gaming Table games, slots and electronics sit together on a city-centre floor, with live poker tournaments and cash games, a Poker Cash Dash League and Prime Three Card Poker among the published offer.

Getting In Inside The Gate on Newgate Street, a few minutes’ walk from Monument and Newcastle Central Station, so there is no reason to drive. Photo ID at the door and smart-casual dress. No rooms of its own — Premier Inn Newcastle City Centre is in the same block, with Motel One and the Maldron minutes away.

Dining The Carling Bar and Freya’s Bar handle food and drink, with combined offers the venue calls Burger Beer & Bet and Pizza, Pint & Punt. Straightforward casino food built around a session rather than a separate dining occasion.

Atmosphere Loud at a weekend and noticeably calmer midweek, which its Monday-to-Thursday hours reflect. The Gate’s bars and cinema are on the other side of the door, so the room is never the only thing happening.

Getting In Livesey Street in Owlerton, north-west of the city centre near Hillsborough, with free parking, so driving or a taxi is the sensible approach. Identification is checked on arrival. There are no rooms here: The Garrison Hotel is about ten minutes on foot, with city-centre options roughly two miles out.

Dining A restaurant overlooking the floor serves dinner from five until ten daily. The bar keeps beers, wines, spirits and a gin list, bar food runs from three in the afternoon until three in the morning, and a gaming-floor menu comes to the tables.

Atmosphere Independent and locally run, with a regular crowd and a slower rhythm than the chain rooms. The terrace and the restaurant view over the tables give it more of a night-out feel than its setting suggests.

Comparing the four

Points of difference worth noting

Location does most of the work in this region. Resorts World Birmingham puts gaming, a hotel and a spa inside one resort complex on the NEC campus, while Coventry’s casino shares an arena complex with a DoubleTree, so both work as overnight trips without a taxi. Newcastle’s floor sits inside The Gate on Newgate Street, surrounded by bars, and Sheffield’s is a standalone building in Owlerton with its own parking.

Opening hours vary more than the floors do. Coventry runs continuously bar Christmas Day, Newcastle stays open right through from Friday midday to Monday morning, Birmingham closes at five in the morning with live gaming from one, and Sheffield deals from one in the afternoon until six. Plan the journey around the table times, not the doors.
